Ted Sullivan - Vice-President/Chief Architect

Ted has over 20 years of experience in a diverse range of information technologies. His background includes biomedical research, mathematics instruction, developing military planning systems, and numerous eBusiness solutions. As Chief Architect, Ted is responsible for keeping Raritan Technologies at the forefront of search related technologies (e.g. KM, CMS, collaboration tools, classification, entity extraction and search tools). He brings to this role considerable experience in systems research and development. In this role Ted is the architect of the Raritan Search Integration Framework Toolkit.

Before becoming a co-founder of Raritan, Ted was a Senior Java Architect for Blueflame Inc, where he was responsible for designing the critical application/security code for the HW Wilson Company's new bibliographic Web system. He developed several innovative approaches to combining Java and eXtensible Markup Language (XML) in Web systems (incorporating Java3D and VRML). Ted designed sophisticated collaborative systems for the US Army used in planning and mission deployment. He also developed specialized software for the education, medical insurance, and pharmaceutical industries. At Raritan, Ted is the chief architect for the framework suite. This toolkit uses factory patterns to instantiate configurable components using an XML file. This approach is very lightweight and fosters reuse of component code for many projects.

Ted received a BSc from Cornell University and a PhD from Washington University. Following post-doctoral research in neuroscience at the California Institute of Technology, he joined the Biology Department at Princeton University as an Assistant Professor. His scientific research focused on the brain mechanisms of sound perception, which led him to develop sophisticated computer software for data acquisition, analysis, and neural network simulations.

Jeff Laughlin - Vice President

As VP at Raritan Technologies, Mr. Laughlin works in a variety of capabilities as the situation dictates, including: (i) Product Definition and Marketing, (ii) Business Strategy, (iii) assisting in raising funds from traditional equity and debt financing sources; (iv) modeling the key financial and operational metrics of a business or particular segment of a business; and (v) selling and developing OEM and other distribution channels for the SIFT framework and vertical applications.

Mr. Laughlin was one of the co-founders of Commerce.TV and served as Chairman of the Board of Directors.  His primary responsibilities included: fundraising; investor relations; and negotiating strategic agreements for the interactive TV software and services provider.  Starting in December 1999 and ending with the sale of the Company’s assets in 2002, he secured capital in the form of equity and debt in excess of $80 million.  A sample of the companies that invested in, and/or executed strategic agreements with, Commerce.TV include: Citigroup; Motorola; Insight Communications; Adelphia Communications; Open TV (Liberty Broadband); ESPN; Starz Encore; New England Partners; Scientific Atlanta; Worldgate Communications; Audax Ventures; Centre Partners; Sandler Capital; Davenport Capital Ventures; Liberate Technologies; and DRW Ventures.

Prior to forming Commerce.TV, he was one of the co-founders of Open Development Corporation (ODC) where Mr. Laughlin and three partners started the telecom software company in 1993 with $3,000 in cash and a lot of good ideas.  They then grew to over 140 employees and more the $15 million in profitable revenue by the end of 1996.  The Company’s first five financing events were accomplished by creative bootstrapping without raising any money through an equity offering.  At the end of 1996 they closed a Series A financing in excess of $12 million that was, at the time, the largest private equity financing in Massachusetts.  This was the only formal round of fundraising that the Company would need.  Less than a year later the Company was acquired for $51 million in cash.  A sample of the companies that executed strategic agreements with ODC include: GTE Communications; GTE Wireless; GTE TSI; Nortel; Pacific Bell; Alltel; Cellular One; AT&T/Allestra(Mexico); Frontier Communications; Telecom of Jamaica; Cable & Wireless; Harris; Intervoice; and Glenayre – who ultimately acquired the Company.

Prior to forming ODC, Mr. Laughlin spent the previous decade as an entrepreneur and in sales, marketing and software development roles in the database, transaction processing and telecommunication software industries.  He started his first company in 1983, ABC Software, where he spent two years working as a software developer.  He also worked as product manager and salesman/sales manager for several companies that were acquired, including Voicetek Corporation, GBI Communications, and CTI Call Technologies, Inc.  Mr. Laughlin has a BSBA in Computer Information Systems from Northeastern University.
